The Forsaken InnA Novel Anna Katharine Green 9781468133790 Books

Anna Katharine Green is called the American Agatha Christie and for good reason. I just discovered this author and am so glad I did. This story takes place in the 1700s and the language and decorum is accurate for the time period, so if you're not into a historical mystery or don't care for that time period or the way people spoke in the 1700s, you might want to pass this one up. I happen to love this era and type of story. The setting is an inn in New York State, but it reminds me of a spooky manor house in England. This is a great Gothic with a central mystery about 2 couples, of which one of the couples plots a plan that involves getting rich quick and some really bad stuff that comes back to haunt them years later. This is a real page turner. I enjoyed it so much, I immediately downloaded 4 more of Green's books and am currently reading The Mayor's Wife and finding it just as intriguing with another creepy house, spooky neighbors, a wife who is suffering from a strange melancholia, and possible ghosts lurking about.

It was virtually impossible to put this book down! What a mystery! What a writer. I highly recommend this book. Modern mysteries are too often filled with violence, sex, and bad language. This one has only implied violence and certainly no sex or bad language; yet it was so well-written. It grabs you from the first paragraph.
I've been reading mystery novels for over 20 years and I have never heard of Anna Katharine Green before. Then I took a class about historical fiction and some of her work was featured in it. She is known as the one of the first writers of detective fiction. She is known as the "mother of detective fiction".

This story takes place in the late 1700's and is told from the viewpoint of the innkeeper of the Happy-Go-Lucky Inn. It involves a tragic young bride and a hidden room.
I ordered it because it sounded like a good mystery. I was surprised to find it written so well in a writing style and language of a bygone era, but with no explaination as to why that was so. Intrigued by the story I read it all the way through completely enjoying the mystery . I also noted how the style never faltered and it was so well written as an old time mystery. Not until I finished the book did I realize it truly was an old time mystery- published in 1889!!! The story has withstood the test of time very well and was a fun read.

Since I had acquired it through one of the free book services I had not received any information about the book..
intriguing. It was a different sort of story from what I expected. Odd twists of plot, and unusual development. Overall, it kept me interested, but not one I would put on "re-read" list. Good for a free book, though.
Story is narrated as a tale of an old abandoned building's mystery shared with a curious traveler. The building that was once an inn hosts a tale of murder and secret passages. The story line keeps the reader interested, however the writer's style does make it somewhat challenging to get through at first, until the reader becomes accustomed. The narration changes to that of the inn's keeper and somehow becomes totally disconnected from the beginnings of the novel. The mystery in the interest of the curious traveler and who the original narrator is was never explained or referred to again. The story with its gothic overtures however, kept it interesting.
4 1/2 stars

This was one of those free kindle books; you know, the kind with the boring red and cream cover? In fact, if it wasn't for the generic cover I would have read it much sooner but it looked sooooooo one-of-a-hundred that there was nothing to hook me in. Which is a shame cos I almost missed out on a great thriller.

This book comprises all the creepy elements that make a good vintage mysteryan old house, secret rooms, intrigue, assumed identities and a crime that lies hidden for 16 years until... a panel is moved and....behold! A shrunken skeleton with an engraved wedding band....

By the way, if you think you know all the whole mystery in the first few chapters, you're wrong. Just keep reading.

This would have been 5 stars for me but I took half a star off because I wasn't thrilled with the second hand narration. But once I got past that, I really , really enjoyed it.

This was a pretty good book. It would have been much better if it had been shorter. The plot was interesting and different. The characterization and location was interesting. My biggest complaint is how very "florid" is the dialogue. Granted, this was a book written well over 100 years ago, so the fact that the plot is so interesting and story still relevant is very good. Back in the day, writers were so effusive with their description of character's feelings, you could skip entire paragraphs. It's truly a case of - if the book had been half as long, it would have been twice as good. Even so, I did enjoy the book and would recommend a read for those who enjoy reading a wide variety of fiction.
