David 'Tool' Roney is a dangerous man with a moral code. Stuck in brutal Parchman Maximum Security Prison in Mississippi, doing life for armed robbery, and abused by his guards, he is consumed by only one thing - escape. His plotting pays off, and together with two other inmates he breaks free. But escaping and staying free are two different things. Tool hits the road with only one thing in mind - to return to the prison and to take vengeance on his tormentors. That's Tool's Law. But then he meets a girl called Rose. Shank is an archetypal Great American novel as well as an existentialist meditation on imprisonment and a gripping pulp story. The writing is clean and clipped, the pacing is breathless. The action and the story’s tragic background roll seamlessly together into a steam train of a novel. If Mark Twain, Jean Paul Sartre and Richard Stark had spent creative time in a prison yard, this is what they might have come up with.

Shank Tool Law I Roy Harper Books Reviews
Roy Harper has written an excellent first novel about an escaped convict from one of America’s most brutal prisons, Mississippi’s Parchman Farm. Shank is super-realistic because Roy Harper is currently serving a life-sentence without possibility of parole in the maximum security unit inside Parchman, from which Mr. Harper has escaped, not once but twice.
Hard to believe this is Mr. Harper’s first novel. He can’t have had very much formal education since he has been a career criminal his entire adult life and has spent very little time outside a cage. Yet Mr. Harper’s story unfolds with the skill and polish of a best-selling author. Just about any crime fiction writer active today would be proud to have penned such a story.
I salute Mr. Harper’s perseverance since he had to write his page turner by hand, surreptitiously and without access to writing materials, and in secret get the manuscript to and find a publisher for his novel. Against all odds he was successful.
I am pretty certain from the way this book ends, there will be another follow-up book to look forward to, and I can’t wait till I can devour it just as I did Shank. Bravo Roy Harper!
I can’t imagine any reader not enjoying this book and I heartily recommend it.
I give the author massive kudos for writing while imprisoned. He has a unique perspective and it's worth reading.
Pretty good
An absolute action thriller. Had me holding my breath, nearly jumping at times. The transitions are seemless; one minute eyes wide with suspense, the next closed in laughter. Overall a damn good read.
Good story and character development. Most interested in next sequel to read where the characters go from here...
What can i say but thank you for writing this ,you can tell that Mr Harper wrote from his gut and heart. This man is the real deal folks and i can't recommend this book enough.I have already bought the second and i understand there will be a third, keep up the crazy Mr Harper.10+star's in my book👌
I enjoyed Roy Harper's story line, and found Shank to be an excellent debut novel. In fact, was surprised to learn that this is his first book. The characters were well developed, which leads the reader to take an interest in them. Also, Harper's knowledge of Mississippi mentality, geography, and cultural nuances is first hand, as are his depictions of Parchman, the Mississippi State Penitentiary. Language is strong throughout the book, but then, the subject matter and characterization undoubtedly fit as per the story itself. Good read! I give Shank five stars.
